Spainish Secondary Education

Before the educational law in 1990, secondary education accustomed to last several years following eight long years with Educacion General Basica (EGB) and Formacion Profesional (FP). And It brought about the Bachillerato Unificado y Polivalente (BUP). So, pupils who got the Bachillerato (BUP) could attend Curso de Orientacion Universitaria (COU), a one-year university preparation course which one of the fundamentals for entrance to high school.
After the 1990 educational law, secondary education became obligatory, and it nowadays lasts four years, and follows the primary education, which lasts six years and it guides to the graduado en educacion secundaria. Besides, studies guiding to the titulo de bachillerato will take another couple of years. Students take examinations and must do well in all subjects. In order to enter university, people must take an entrance examination (called selectividad).
Spanish Higher Education
The university system in Spain starts from the Middle Ages. And the oldest among all Spanish Universities is called Salamanca, established in 1218. However, the present system is in fact heir liberal university in the 19th century, enthused by the centralized model of France. During the last decades, it has seen its greatest development in history, while simultaneously advancing towards a independent and descentralized system.
So, higher education is given by public as well as private institutions. And universities are splitted into departamentos, then facultades universitarias and escuelas tecnicas superiores, plusĀ escuelas universitarias and institutos universitarios, in addition to other centres, especially the colegios universitarios.
Spanish Ministry of Education together with the numerous higher education departments in the universities manages the activities of governmental and private institutions, it also proposes the key lines of educational course of action. The Consejo de Universidades plans guidelines for the conception of universities, centers as well as institutes.
